Most recently, I’ve been experimenting with collaged reference images, primarily sourced from photos I've taken to break up conventional pictorial space. The graffitied wall behind the lamb and the figure are from an old military fortification in Maine that I photographed in 2018. What struck me were the words “no die” and “cry deeply,” which became especially poignant during the pandemic. I wanted to capture the energetic stillness of the woman sipping champagne on a picnic blanket, having a calm moment in front of the frenetic intensity of the graffiti. The black sheep symbolizes being different from the rest, and that (to me) is what gives it power.
