Tureen (13 x 7.5 x 9 inches) and underplate (14.25 x 10 inches). Brown transfer with polychrome clobbering and gilding. Printed maker's mark for Wallis Gimson & Co. The Rd. No. indicates a pattern registration date of 1884. This pattern features a wide band with three different motifs. One is a stylized flowerhead, the second is a horizontal branch of flowers and berries, and the third is a large spray of cabbage roses that extend partly into the center of the plate.
Gimson specialized in making ware in a series such as ‘The World’ and ‘Achievements of Notable Victorians.’ In February the partnership between Joseph Gimson Jr. and Thomas Wallis Gimson was dissolved and Thomas W. Gimson continued on his own account. At the time of bankruptcy of the business it was Thomas Wallis Gimson who was trading as Wallis Gimson & Co.
