Sonrisa Series created for Ballet Folklorico Quetzalli and debuted at Cultural Coalition's 2024 Mask Alive Festival. Artist, Zarco Guerrero created these masks to add more variety at festivals. After realizing the large number of aggressive-faced masks he produced, he decided it was time to lighten the air with two new series of masks; the 2024 Sonrisa & Funny Face Series. The smiley face has been used as a motif in Mexico since ancient times, especially in masks and sculptures. By creating the new mask series, the artist payed tribute to traditional themes used in Mexican art and provided a special element of humor and cheerfulness at the festival.
Tan skin. Thick eyebrows with a brown base and black stripes on top. Light blue eyeshadow on upper eyelids. Red, glossy lips. Opened mouth smile with top and bottom rows of teeth showing; six on top, eight on the bottom. Two smile lines on both sides of the mouth.
