Part of the Ollin Yoliztli Calaca Series. Masks created over the duration of 3-4 years. While creating this collection, the artist developed and perfected his own style of painting for the calaca masks.
Ollin Yoliztli is a Phoenix based dance group that performs traditional Mexican Folklore dances. Cultural Coalition has partnered with them for decades, educating the public and keeping Mexican traditions alive within the community.
Calaca mask with off-white painted base. Designs painted with pink, yellow, blue, orange, and purple color scheme. Border of eyes painted in orange with thin purple eyebrows. Pink gem in between the eyebrows. Four gems above the eyebrows, two red ones closest to the center, and two purple ones closest to the outer forehead. Blue v-shaped line painted directly above the pink gem. One wavy blue line on each cheek. Orange gem next to the wavy blue line, on each cheek. Additional wavy blue line on the chin. Four swirly green lines, two on each side of the forehead, and below each cheek. Nostrils painted purple. Border of teeth outlined in pink with five short orange lines above teeth and two below the teeth.
