The arid central plains of Montana are populated by sagebrush and sandstone formations. The sandstone has been carved, through millennia, by the movement of water. These are ancient mountains, worn now to cliffs or breaks that flank the Yellowstone River, leaving the high dry areas to juniper and sage, which are a valuable habitat for the hardy wildlife of the area.
