Phase two, completed May 2024 - "Take Flight"
For their first mural as a collective, Capsel Rock and Eliza Be joined Pattrick “Teak” Price to create "Take Flight" as an extension of Teak’s previous murals on the building. Teak’s beautiful formline work represents the traditional Tlingit art from Alaska; he continued to work off the original mural by adding the Three Sisters Mountain line, coniferous forest and sunset with the Tlingit formline skyline. Eliza and Capsel designed the composition of a figure and two native Osprey with placement suggesting flight and a confident strength. Eliza executed the figure in her contemporary and colorful style and worked with Capsel on the Osprey. Capsel finished the details of the Osprey with his unique visionary look and blasted graffiti street styles throughout the piece.
Native art is a rare and important practice that speaks a strong message of cultural preservation, strength and resonation. The strong figure is shining through this piece, reminding viewers of the capabilities and grace of the feminine. The native Osprey remind us that connecting with, protecting and being at one with nature is the key to a healthy existence. And the graffiti flair adds playfulness, the contemporary and the breaking down of boundaries. The message of this piece is that we humans, with our unique differences and astounding similarities, can take flight together.
Representing native heritage in Eugene is needed and has already impacted many people. It helps people belonging to the BIPOC community to feel safer and more supported. It is also mentionable that the figure is not Indigenous; her heritage is Eastern European. This communicates the potential of coexistence, equity and collaboration between the descendants of both European settlers and indigenous tribes of North America. The collaboration of these communities shows the strength to create anew and to welcome the fresh, loving and accepting power of open-mindedness. The future is now and these artists are honored and pleased to be part of it.
Phase one, completed by Teak in September 2023 - "Community Sunset in Eugene"
This mural is a reflection of the previous mural I painted last year. The painting features a sunset background in Alaskan native formline, a night profile of the city of Eugene, and Hawaiian petroglyph style human figures holding hands around the city.
